Automotive Diagnosis and Repair

Why most automotive repair places aren't that good...
Most people don't know this, but when you take your vehicle to an automotive repair shop and they do repairs, most likely, they are overcharging you. All technicians work off what is called "Flat-Rate" when they are repairing your vehicle. Flat-Rate is a pretty much a regulated way of mechanics get paid. It says how much time it should take for a certain task on a certain vehicle to be accomplished. So this is how it works:

Say the Technician is paid $130 per hour... and you're probably thinking: $130 an hour? Are you f*cking kidding me? But think of it this way, an ASE Certified Technician that just got their Certification and just got hire yesterday will start out at around $80 an hour.

Now say they have to change the Oxygen Sensors on a 1991 Nissan 300ZX (Non-Turbo) which is Flat-Rated at 2 hours.

That is $260 you just dished out...

But let's say that they did a quick job of it and it only took about an hour to get done. Whether or not they take 2 hours to do the job, they still get the $260 in labor. So let me restate that another way: if they take 1 hour, they get $260; if they take 4 hours, they get $260.

So it's in their best interest to try to get under the Flat-Rate.

Now let's hear a little bit from my experience...

Story of the S2000

So what do we do?
We give an honest, no-bullshit assessment of automotive problems and fix just what needs to be fixed. There have been too many times where I've seen Technicians take an easy route to fix something by replacing a whole unit instead of fixing what was broken and when asked why they did that, they would reply, "It's just easier, plus, I'm not paying for it, the customer is."
