Say the Technician is paid $130 per hour... and you're probably thinking: $130 an hour? Are you f*cking kidding me? But think of it this way, an ASE Certified Technician that just got their Certification and just got hire yesterday will start out at around $80 an hour. Now say they have to change the Oxygen Sensors on a 1991 Nissan 300ZX (Non-Turbo) which is Flat-Rated at 2 hours.
That is $260 you just dished out... But let's say that they did a quick job of it and it only took about an hour to get done. Whether or not they take 2 hours to do the job, they still get the $260 in labor. So let me restate that another way: if they take 1 hour, they get $260; if they take 4 hours, they get $260. So it's in their best interest to try to get under the Flat-Rate. Now let's hear a little bit from my experience...
